History

  • For the first time in Whitfield County, in 2006, in a period of 5 months, we registered 130 Latino US citizens to vote. We registered some from Murray and Gordon counties. We were featured nationally by the Associated Press.

 


 

  • We continue with ongoing voter registration campaigns, in preparation for local elections in Nov. 2007 and presidential elections in 2008.
  • In 2007 we registered 200 Latino US citizens to vote in Whitfield/Murray counties.
  • In 2008, we have registered 196 Latino US citizens to vote
 

 

  • August 2006, organized a press conference in Dalton one day before the “field hearings”, where republican representatives were promoting anti-immigrant legislation before the elections.
  • August 2006, with NCLR help, helped to coordinate the appearance of Representative Hilda Solis during the ‘field hearing” to balance the testimonies.

 

 

  • From August 2006-December 2006- held a daily radio program, with the support of Pastor Gilbardo Guerrero, to encourage Latinos to vote, to apply for citizenship. Also provided legislative updates on issues affecting Latinos, encouraging community involvement
  • Oct 2006- Held a Citizenship Drive, in which 43 legal residents started the process to become citizens; in colaboration with GLAHR and arranged free consultations with immigration attorneys from Herman, Taylor and Lee Law Firm.
  • Feb-May 2007- Provided, for the first time in Dalton, a Latino Community Leadership Institute in Spanish; in order to help Latino leaders to develop the necessary skills to respond to the community needs. In conjunction with GALEO and UGA Fanning Institute.

  • Held three Immigration Legislative Updates: October 2006, April 14, 2007; and June 7, 2007 to provide accurate information to community members on immigration, in order to reduce anxiety and confusion; in conjunction with GLAHR,  Hernan, Taylor and Lee Law Firm and others

 

  • Oct 2006-July 2007- Held five workshops on “How to Start your Own Business” in Spanish, in collaboration with other Georgia Latino organizations devoted to economic development initiatives.

 

  • March 2007, gathered 2,000 signatures in support of a letter for equal access to higher education, and to advocate for Dalton State College students. The letter was sent to Rep. Nathan Deal.
  • May 2007, held a Community Concert with an internationally known musician traveling from Honduras, as cultural awareness and fundraiser for a scholarship fund for DSC students.


  • May 2007- We testified before the Board of Regents in favor of Dalton State College students.
  • Junio 2007-presente. Organizamos y estamos abogando por 25 victimas de fraude por parte de una agencia de viajes, ya que pagaron a dicha agencia sus boletos y la agencia no pago los boletos a las aerolineas.
  • Dec 2006-Collaborated with other organizations and community members from Cherokee County to stop a resolution on making illegal to rent properties to undocumented immigrants.
  • March 2007- Attended the NCLR National Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, to discuss Latino issues with federal legislators.
  • Ongoing voter registration campaign, in preparation for local elections and 2008 presidential elections.
  • Since Dec. 2006, ongoing weekly citizenship classes for eligible legal residents to start their process.

 

  • Since Nov. 2006- Ongoing English classes for people who need to learn at their own pace
  • August 2007- Forum on Gangs for Spanish speaking parents and kids, as our first activity to help preventing gang involvement by educating Latino parents and kids in their own language, in collaboration with the Police Dept.

 

  • Jul-Sep 2007- Second cycle of Community Leadership Institute
  • Sep 2007- Dec 2007- Third cycle of Community Leadership Institute
  • Sep 2007- Dic 2007- Various activities to promote the LATINO VOTE through community meetings with information about Dalton mayoral candidates, transportation to the polling places, as well as a session on how to use the voting machine
  • October 2007- Candidates Forum- with the support of the group Concerned Citizens of Dalton, we had the four candidates to mayor of Dalton to ask them questions about issues that affect directly the Latino community.
